Street Team Mentors

Street Team Mentors undergo "Why Try" behavioral modification training in preparation to provide peer mentoring to teen youth. Mentors will give advice on how to establish goals, relationships, increase positive motivation, understanding decision & consequences, inappropriate labeling, peer pressure, overcome challenges, seeking support, striving for success, and time management.

Team Priorities:

  • Identify youth in crisis and direct them to proper social service care partners of Inner City Industry.
  • Decrease high school drop out percentage by encouraging youth to remain excited about academics.
  • Provide grievance support in the event of student loss of life.
Street Team Mentor Qualification Training:

Members must be enrolled in at least a local Community College/Trade School taking minimum of 6 units and commit to 5 week training that includes:

Undergo Why Try Behavioral Modification Training—How to establish relationships, increase positive motivation, decision & consequences, understand inappropriate labeling and peer pressure, overcome challenges, seek support, strive for success, desire-time-effort, and goal setting.

Training in Social Skills Classes—How to understand & deal with depression, parenting, domestic violence, drug & alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, AIDS & HIV counseling, dropout prevention, and anger management.

Professional Development Classes: Resume Development, Job Interviewing Skills, Marketing & Sales Skills, Graphic Design, Business English Language Skills, IT Networking, Business Development, Entrepreneurship Skills, Leadership Development, Understanding Corporate Structure, and Financial Literacy Through Cash Flow board game.

Benefits of Becoming Street Team Mentors: Semester stipend for books and tuition, Health Care assistance, internship & employment opportunities, and becoming a disciplined leader.

2007 Street Team Mentor Training & Time Line:

  • September 15-16, 2007 (and four consecutive Saturdays from 9am-3pm)- Certification Trainings
  • October - Introduction of Street Team Mentors to middle school students
  • January 2008 Street Team Mentors will begin peer support groups after school
  • March 2008: Street Team Mentors will introduce ICI's Professional Development Series to high school students
  • April 2008: Street Team Mentors will host after school professional development panels involving executives of corporate partners
